STARRY MESSENGER: COSMIC PERSPECTIVE ON CIVILIZATION, NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON
CURRENT ISSUES • ESSAYS • PERSPECTIVE
Sean and I had a fun weekend getaway to Bend, Oregon, to see Trevor Noah’s show, which I highly recommend. Bend’s downtown area has restaurants and all kinds of shops—jewelry, clothing, yarn, and my favorite, bookstores. Dudley’s Bookshop with its wooden bookshelves, floor, and ceiling and book-inspired staircase is a prime setting for a magical story. When I popped in there this time, one of the first books that caught my eye, faced and in a prime location, was Starry Messenger. It’s been on my to-read list for a bit, so I grabbed a copy.
The book is a collection of essays. These topics have affected humanity thought our collective evolution, but they are front and center in our time. Neil’s perspectives are thoughtfully presented, with well-placed lightness, which does not diminish the important weight of the topics.
There are several quotes at the end of the book, the kind that just zing and resonate, but I restrained myself from adding them here because they cap off the book so perfectly that you simply have to read it so you can get them.
This book is a must-read for all of us.
