My favorite animals (besides dogs and unicorns—which yes, I am sure are real) are penguins. It wasn’t until after reading this book that I noticed the adorable ones at the zoo near me are in fact Humboldt Penguins. I’m sure you can rattle off a few things with the Humboldt name in it, and it’s no wonder because apparently there are more things on our planet named after him than any other one person.
This wonderfully written book reads like an adventure novel and opened my eyes to how the politics of his day affected the science of our world and, ultimately, our history books.
A great read for anyone who likes adventure, science, nature, or history.
Also, on a side note, I purchased this copy in Hawaii at a local bookstore. When I travel, that’s my souvenir— a book from a local shop. The stories, then, somehow draw me back to those places. When I picked up this copy from the shelf, a woman noticed and told me how much she loved the book, “though the print is a little small,” she said. She is right, but you realize it’s because Alexander von Humboldt had a lot of life that Andrea Wulf had to squeeze on the pages, and she did a great job!
